As autumn arrives and wetter weather looms, Bedford Borough Council and the Environment Agency are joining forces for Flood Action Week, a national campaign to help Bedfordians prepare for and reduce the risk of flooding.
Running from Monday, 13 to Friday, 17 October, the week aims to raise awareness, share practical advice, and build community resilience as climate change increases the frequency and severity of flood events across the UK.
According to the Environment Agency, the average cost of recovering from flood damage is around £30,000, and repairs can keep people out of their homes for five months or more.
Local action
Bedford Borough is no stranger to flooding, with communities along the River Great Ouse among those most at risk.
The council says its network of local flood groups has already strengthened communication and emergency response, but residents are being reminded that everyone has a part to play in protecting their own homes.
The council operates a year-round gully clearing rota on public highways, with extra checks carried out in known flood hotspots ahead of the winter season. Emergency teams also respond to reports of blocked drains or debris that could increase flood risk.

“Flood Action Week is not just about information; it’s about empowering every homeowner to protect their property and loved ones.
“While the council and emergency services stand ready to help, being prepared yourself is the first and most important step. Together, we build a safer, stronger Bedford Borough.”
Public event
Flood Action Week will include a range of online and community activities, culminating in a public event at Harpur Square on Friday, 17 October from 11am to 2pm.
Representatives from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Bedfordshire Police, and the Council’s Resilience and Highways teams will be joined by partner organisations to offer advice, answer questions, and provide free resources on flood readiness.
Residents are encouraged to check their insurance, create a flood plan, and know how to shut off utilities in the event of an emergency.
