Bedford Borough Council could form a new Foundation Strategic Authority with Milton Keynes, Central Bedfordshire and Luton as part of the next stage of England’s devolution programme.
Last week (12 February), the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) launched a non-statutory consultation on the proposed geographies for Spatial Development Strategies (SDSs).
This is a new system of strategic planning across wider areas, designed to guide major cross-boundary decisions on housing growth, infrastructure, and land use, rather than being limited to a single council area.
The consultation is inviting expressions of interest from areas without an existing devolution agreement to join a new wave of Foundation Strategic Authorities across England, which could bring devolved powers over local transport and skills.
A press release issued by Milton Keynes Labour representatives said ministers indicated that Milton Keynes, Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, and Luton would be the preferred footprint for the region’s first step towards devolution.
Milton Keynes City Council leader Pete Marland said a clear devolution footprint would help accelerate the delivery of infrastructure and jobs.
