Children in Bedford are being invited to pick up an instrument and start their musical journey thanks to a new partnership between Bedford Music Service and Bedford Central Library.
The Ukulibrary, a new free ukulele borrowing scheme, launches on Saturday, 29 November at 2pm at Bedford Central Library, Harpur Square.
The launch event will include a performance by students from Balliol Primary School and tips from Bedford Music Service teachers on how to get started.
The initiative gives children the chance to borrow a ukulele just like a library book, helping more families access music without the cost of buying an instrument.
Children with a valid library card can borrow a ukulele and access learning resources curated by Bedford Music Service to help them learn at their own pace.
The scheme supports pupils already taking ukulele lessons through local schools, while also encouraging new learners to give it a try at home.
It’s quick and easy to join the library, either online or in person at any Bedford Borough library during staffed hours.
Cllr Sarah Gallagher (Conservative, Shortstown), portfolio holder for customer experience, leisure and culture, said: “We’re thrilled to launch the Ukulibrary, which brings music and joy to children in Bedford Borough in a unique way.
This initiative supports creativity and learning, making music more accessible. We encourage all parents and carers to come along to the launch with their children and discover the fun of playing the ukulele.”
Entry to the launch event is free, and all are welcome.
