Bedford Town have today (8 August) announced amendments to their opening league fixtures after the completion of the new 3G pitch has faced delays and will not be ready for the start of the new season.
A source from Bedford Town Football Club has confirmed that the latest delivery of parts will take place on Monday 12th August while they are expecting work to be completed in time for the pitch officially opening on 21st September.
There are currently only two scheduled ‘home’ fixtures for Bedford Town to navigate before that date, with the Eagles due to host Redditch United on Saturday 21st September in Southern League Premier Central.
Lee Bircham’s team have enjoyed a fruitful pre-season campaign, culminating in a 1-1 draw at Taunton Town in Somerset last weekend but the competitive action kicks off this Saturday (10 August) with an away fixture at fellow new step three side, Spalding United.
Langford Road, the home of Biggleswade Town, will now play host to the Eagles’ first scheduled home game of the season on Tuesday 13th August against Royston Town with Halesowen Town agreeing to a ground reversal for the following Saturday.
The Eyrie had been due to play host on Saturday 17th August, but that game will now be played at The Grove with Bedford Town’s home game against Halesowen played as part of their festive campaign on 28th December.
Details of the planned home encounter with Bishops Stortford on Monday 26th August are due to be confirmed with trips to Stratford Town and Biggleswade Town to follow while Bedford Town enter the FA Cup at the first qualifying round scheduled for 31st August.
A home FA Cup draw may well complicate the equation for officials at The Eyrie who are working hard to ensure the start of the season runs as smoothly as possible in complicated circumstances.
Upon completion however, the new 3G pitch will bring a host of positives for Bedford Town Football Club including avoiding the spate of postponements that stopped the Eagles in their tracks last season.
In an interview with the Bedford Independent last month, manager Lee Bircham praised the club’s decision to install a new 3G pitch, helping with his side’s momentum as well as bringing a host of community benefits.
