While the majority of the nation’s sport lovers gear up for a new football and rugby season, one Bedfordian is making headlines in a sport rarely featured among the headlines – the world of roller hockey.
Maymounah Abroudj-Ameur was selected for Great Britain at the World Skate Games, currently taking place in Novara, Italy giving Bedford another name to boast in reaching the world stage and with a few days of competition left, it’s all to play for.
Team GB endured a tough start to the competition against stronger opposition in Spain, Chile and hosts, Italy but they still have a chance of progression as they face Portugal in the quarter-finals today, (19 September).
They could face Italy again in the semi-finals if the hosts beat Colombia, but the unbeaten Portuguese will be a stiff challenge if they are to make Friday’s semi-final with the final on the penultimate day of the Games on Saturday 21st September.
Maymounah learnt to Skate in Bedford at the Bunyan Centre and started playing roller hockey with the Bedford Griffins.
She left the Griffins and moved to Letchworth Roller Hockey Club where she was coached by two international players in Nigel and Andrew Allen, but will now move on to Durham University while keeping up her roller hockey skills.
Whatever the final result may be, the experience for Maymounah and her international teammates will be paramount in their development for future tournaments around the world.
