There had been a few nervous faces around the committee of Mowsbury Golf Club with the rain and cold weather recently, but the sun came out to play on Sunday (23 June) as the Club celebrated their annual Captain’s Day event.
The club raised just over £1800 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service, with the Captain’s Day medal proceeded by an open ‘Texas Scramble’ event which saw 17 teams take part on a warm Sunday afternoon.
The charity is the beneficiary of a year’s worth of fundraising for the captain’s charity at Mowsbury Golf Club for 2024, with the total standing at almost £2,800 after just three months of the captain’s stint.
Tammy Swiderski, Community Fundraising Lead for Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire at East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) said, “On behalf of everyone at East Anglian Air Ambulance, I would like to say a huge thank you to David, Mowsbury Golf Club and everyone who helped to organise, participate in or support this fantastic event in aid of the charity.”
No regular Government funding
“We know that a great deal of work goes on behind the scenes to arrange an event like this and we are very grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone taking part.
“With no regular government funding, EAAA relies on the people East Anglia to raise the £19 million we need each year to continue to deliver and develop our life-saving services.
“Our specialist crews provide vital advanced pre-hospital emergency medical services to critically ill or injured people 24/7 by air and by road in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
“This would not be possible without the incredible support and generosity of the people, groups, clubs and businesses in these counties. A heartfelt thank you.”
On the course, Randolph Charles won the Captain’s Day Shield in the morning with a nett 64 while Chris Collin won the gross prize. Sandra Charles, Karen Heaume and Anne McGregor took home the Women’s titles.
There was also a host of mini competitions, with Mick Jenion, Mark Middleton, Andy Everett and Avtar Bahra winning ‘Nearest the Pin’ on each of the four par-3s with Lindon Nelson hitting the longest drive on the long par four 2nd hole.
After lunch, which was enjoyed in the marquee behind the 9th green, the teams for the afternoon Texas Scramble arrived with 17 foursomes vying for the prize.
A ‘Texas Scramble’ format allows teams of four to pick their best shot from the tee and play on from there, allowing a more relaxed atmosphere and some low scoring for the teams involved.
The Club winners of the Texas Scramble were the foursome of Leigh Kopec, Pete Jarrett, Bert Sinclair and Pete Chard who scored a winning total of 61.3 while the overall winners from the afternoon were Ryan Fry, Brandon Fry, Charlie Hurley and Jason Hurley who managed to post an impressive 55.1.
The Captain’s Bunker Challenge from the 18th Green also played a part in raising money for charity, along with a raffle in the evening with the day culminating in the now customary tradition of throwing as much cold water as possible over the Captain on the 1st tee.
More charity activities are planned throughout the summer, with the Captain’s Day weekend away aiming to raise more money for the EAAA while there is a race night planned in October.
