With just days to go until this year’s Proms in Bedford Park, one of Britain’s best-loved tenors, Russell Watson, says he can’t wait to take to the stage for what promises to be a magical summer evening.
Part of the Bedford Summer Sessions series, Proms returns to the park on Sunday, 6 July, with soprano Lesley Garrett, conductor Robert Emery, the London Gala Orchestra, Bedford Choral Society and Bedford Rock Choir.
It’s set to be a night of uplifting music, tradition and celebration.
Speaking to the Bedford Independent, Russell said the combination of setting, audience and music always makes events like this special.
“When you get these types of events where you’ve got a big gathering of humans all in one place, it really does stir the soul,” he said. “Looking out on a sea of smiling faces, hopefully in some good weather, is marvellous. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Russell has performed for royalty, presidents, and at iconic venues around the world, but said concerts like the Proms remain close to his heart because they bring classical music to everyone.
Suprise duet
“The transition of classical music being available to the masses really began with the Three Tenors in 1990, and it’s so important,” he said.
“Events like this help keep classical music alive, presenting it to large audiences. We want it to flourish and sustain through to the next generation. And here, you see families, grandparents, young children… everyone enjoying it. That’s the beauty of it.”
This year’s Proms will feature a full programme of popular classical favourites, a few surprises and a special duet with Lesley Garrett, which Russell is keeping under wraps until the night.
“We’ve sung together before, but this is a piece we’ve never performed as a duet,” he revealed. “I think the audience will love it.”
And he encouraged those still undecided about coming along to make this the year they join the party.
“It’s always a marvellous night,” he said. “Bring your picnic basket, bring your favourite tipple, sit back and enjoy. The staging will look and sound fantastic thanks to the team at Cuffe and Taylor – they put on a great show.”
Looking ahead to Sunday, he had just one wish: “I’d say about 22 degrees with a nice north-easterly breeze. Just the right weather for a perfect British summer night.”
