By Autumn 2025, all residential and commercial properties in Bedford Borough will have kerbside glass recycling collections, the council has confirmed.
The roll-out follows a successful trial in selected areas and residents will be notified when their area will be added to the initiative.

The trial, which tested the collection of glass in orange-lidded recycling bins, has been well-received by both residents and collection crews and the Council aims to significantly increase the amount of glass being recycled – contributing to higher overall recycling rates across the Borough.
Preparations are now underway to extend the scheme later this year to include all homes and commercial properties in the Borough.
Unfortunately, the recent fire at Elstow Waste Transfer Station delayed the plan, but the Council say it is working closely with its contractors to ensure the infrastructure is in place to manage the anticipated increase in recycling tonnage.
Cllr Nicola Gribble, portfolio holder for environment, said: “We’re excited to be expanding kerbside glass collections across Bedford Borough. The success of the pilot scheme shows there’s a real desire among residents to recycle more, and more easily.
“By making glass recycling part of everyday collections, we’re offering a simple, practical way for people to help reduce waste and protect our environment.”
Residents will be notified when their area is due to join the scheme via leaflets through their doors and updates through the Council’s social media and website.
