Every household and business in Bedford Borough will soon be able to recycle glass from home as part of their regular bin collections.
From Monday, 1 December, Bedford Borough Council will expand kerbside glass recycling to cover all residential and commercial properties, following a successful pilot scheme that received strong support from residents and collection crews.
During the trial, Bedfordians in selected areas were able to place glass bottles and jars in their orange-lidded recycling bins. The pilot saw recycling rates rise and showed apparent demand for more convenient glass recycling across the Borough.
The wider rollout was delayed after a fire at the Elstow Waste Transfer Station earlier this year, but the Council and its contractors have since confirmed that infrastructure and processing capacity are now ready for the full expansion.

Waste reduction
Cllr Nicola Gribble (Independent, Renhold and Ravensden), Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “We’re delighted to confirm that kerbside glass collections will start across Bedford Borough from Monday, 1 December.
“The strong response to our trial proves that residents want to recycle more glass, and making this part of regular collections is a straightforward way to help our environment and reduce waste.”
To help locals prepare, information leaflets will be delivered to all households, explaining how to recycle glass and outlining future plans for household food waste collections.
Stickers will also be placed on orange-lidded bins to remind residents that glass can now be placed in them.
