Leadership means doing what’s right, not what’s popular, to protect vital services and the borough’s future. The past few months have been among the most challenging I have witnessed during my time on Bedford Borough Council.
The financial situation our authority now faces is serious, and while many residents are understandably frustrated and seeking answers, the truth is that there are no easy solutions, only hard conversations and harder decisions.
As a Labour Group, we have tried to be the voice of reason amidst the growing noise.
We made a conscious decision not to get drawn into the political back-and-forth over “who’s to blame.” It may not win us headlines, and it may even have cost us politically, but we believe our role is to focus on solutions, not to score points.
Our priority remains clear: to work collaboratively with councillors of all parties to protect essential services, safeguard the most vulnerable, and secure the long-term sustainability of Bedford Borough Council.
Financial mismanagement
That said, honesty is important. Part of the financial crisis we now face stems from poor decision-making and financial mismanagement by the current administration.

Key reserves have been depleted, spending controls inconsistent, and difficult choices delayed, while costs and demands have continued to rise.
It would be wrong, however, not to acknowledge that the previous administration, which Labour was part of, left the council’s budget in a reasonably healthy position.
We did not always agree on every policy, but the approach then was one of caution, careful planning, and long-term responsibility. Those values seem to have been lost in recent years, and residents are now feeling the consequences.
At the same time, Bedford is not alone in facing these challenges. Councils across the country, Conservative, Labour and Independent alike, are struggling to balance their books after more than a decade of deep and damaging cuts of the central government funding to local authorities.

Chronic underfunding
The Conservative government’s legacy after 14 years is one of chronic underfunding of local authorities, leaving them to shoulder growing pressures without the resources to meet them.
The result has been a crisis in essential services. Adult social care and children’s services are stretched to breaking point, while the cost of temporary housing has spiralled beyond control.
Councils are being asked to do more with less every year, and the people paying the price are often the most vulnerable in our communities.
Inflation, population growth, and the national housing shortage have only intensified the strain, pushing local authorities like Bedford to the edge.
In this difficult financial climate, every option must be on the table. Some proposals, such as the possible introduction of green bin charges, are deeply unpopular.
Both the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives have already begun campaigning against the green bin collection charge – seeking popularity whilst they know full well that the CIPFA report explicitly advised that such charges would be necessary.

Resilience
But the Labour Group believes leadership means being honest about the reality we face.
We must be willing to make difficult decisions, not because they will be popular, but because they are necessary to protect the council’s future and to lessen the burden on taxpayers in the long term.
Despite the challenges, the Bedford Borough Labour Group remains steadfast in our commitment to do what is right, not what is easy. We will continue to scrutinise decisions, offer constructive alternatives, and work across political lines for the good of our residents.
Our message is simple: this is not about blame, but about responsibility. Our borough deserves leadership that looks forward, not backwards, leadership that listens, collaborates and acts with integrity.
The months ahead will not be easy, but I believe Bedford Borough has the resilience, the experience, and the compassion to navigate this storm.
Together, we can ensure that our council remains strong, sustainable, and capable of delivering the services our residents rely on. That is the responsibility we owe to the people we serve.
