Bedford Ladies Tug of War side, one of the most successful in the world, continued their domestic dominance at the weekend with a gold medal in the final of the 520kg weight class in the British and Irish Championships on Saturday.
The team moved on to the open club competition on Sunday, cleaning up in the process by winning four gold medals across multiple weight classes, plus a silver in the mixed 4×4 competition, which is where four men compete with four women on one rope.
Bedford’s team, who were asked to represent England at the Championships after another storming competition at the English National Championships in Devon, produced a perfect group stage and a semi-final before dominating the final in straight ends to secure gold.
Bedford were representing England ‘A’ team and went on to beat the England ‘B’ team in the 520kg weight class final to complete their perfect day.

Confidence was high for the second day of the meeting, the open club stage where Bedford continued their gold rush with a further four gold medals and a silver, making Bedford one of the most successful clubs at the event in Melton Mowbray.
They won golds in the 500kg, 520kg, 540kg and 560kg competitions in a clean sweep on Sunday in perfect preparation for the biggest meeting of them all in September.
Bedford Ladies are now full steam ahead for the 2024 World Championships, which will take place from 5th September in Mannheim, Germany.
The club have once again been invited to represent England, this time in the Ladies 540kg Championship, and will also contest competitions in the open club championships.
