A Bedford volunteer who usually helps transport cancer patients for life-saving treatment is gearing up for two major cycling challenges to raise funds for a lift service he drives for.
Mike Walsh, one of the dedicated team of drivers with the Primrose Car Service, will be taking on the gruelling Wicklow 200 in Ireland on Sunday, 8 June, followed just one week later by the London to Brighton ride on Sunday, 15 June.
While the London–Brighton ride is no small feat at 87km, the Wicklow 200 is widely considered Ireland’s toughest cycling challenge. The route covers over 200 kilometres and 11,000 feet of climbing through County Wicklow’s mountainous terrain.
Mike is raising funds for the Primrose Car Service, which provides free transport for Bedfordshire cancer patients travelling to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for radiotherapy treatment.
The service, operated by a team of 35 volunteer drivers and coordinated by a volunteer manager, is supported entirely by Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends donations.
Mike said about the challenge: “It’s an honour to be part of the Primrose Car Service and help support people at what can be a very difficult time. These rides are a way to give something more to a cause I care deeply about.”
The service is considered unique in the UK, and in 2014, they were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award for voluntary service.
This award recognises the commitment of all past and present volunteer drivers who give their skills and time to help other members of their community.
